Before Road RemovalBeginning of Road RemovalAfter Road Removal

Views before and after road removal of Road S1 on the Headwaters Reserve.  Note in the after picture below, stream side slopes were laid back to a stable hillslope grade that mimics natural hillslope topography. All bare side slopes were mulched with rice straw.  Note the fully outsloped road approaches.  Funded by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG), Fisheries Restoration Grant Program.

Decommissioning of R68 Road

R68 Road, otherwise known as the R7 Road to the BLM.  This road was treated in the summer of 2002, and had supplemental re-contouring and out-sloping treatments carried out on reaches between CDFG sites.  First, the out-board fill slope was excavated and either placed on the inside of the road and cut-bank or end-hauled to a stable location.  Then, the dozer graded the loose soil and packed it under its tracks.  Note the end of the ditch relief culvert exposed in the lower left corner of the photo.  The stumps on the left of the photo were previously buried by side-cast fill from the road.

Before and after road removal of stream crossing sites #140 and #140.1 on the S1 Road. The pictures were taken from about the same vantage point. Approximately 10,500 cubic yards of fill were removed from these two sites combined.  In the lower photo, note the person for scale near the bottom center of the photo.
